Halal Investing Guide – How to Invest the Right Way

Key Market Insights

Investing is one of the best ways to grow wealth, but for Muslims, it’s important to ensure that investments align with Islamic financial principles. This means avoiding interest (riba), unethical industries, and excessive uncertainty (gharar). However, when I started investing, I found that finding halal investments was not easy—most platforms either required paid subscriptions or did not offer clear guidance on halal stocks and ETFs.

In this post, I will share what I have learned about halal investing, how to identify Shariah-compliant stocks, and the best platforms and strategies to make sure your investments align with Islamic principles.

What is Halal Investing?

Halal investing follows Islamic financial principles, ensuring that money is invested in ethical businesses and that no profits come from haram activities.

Key Principles of Halal Investing:

  • ✔ No interest (riba) – Investments cannot involve interest-based transactions.
  • ✔ No haram industries – Avoid companies involved in alcohol, gambling, pork, adult entertainment, and conventional finance.
  • ✔ Ethical & Transparent – The company must have a clear and ethical business model.
  • ✔ Low debt levels – Excessive debt financing is not allowed in Islamic finance.

Finding Halal Stocks & ETFs – My Experience

When I first started investing, I was searching for a platform that could help me find halal stocks. Unfortunately, I realized that most halal stock screening services require payment. Since I didn’t want to rely on paid platforms, I had to analyze each stock manually.

Challenges of Finding Halal Investments:

Not all platforms provide the ability to check whether a stock is halal or not. In most cases, you need to subscribe to a paid service or application to access halal screening tools. To overcome this challenge, I used Baraka app, which helped me screen stocks for compliance with Islamic finance principles.

How to Determine if a Stock is Halal?

There are two main screening criteria to check if a stock is halal:

  1. 1️⃣ Business Activity Screening – The company should not earn revenue from haram industries (e.g., banks, alcohol, gambling).
  2. 2️⃣ Financial Ratio Screening – The company’s finances should be structured in a way that minimizes involvement with interest-based transactions.

The Formula for Halal Stock Screening

To determine whether a stock is Shariah-compliant, we use the following financial ratios:

  • ✔ Debt Ratio: Total interest-based debt must be less than 33% of total assets.
  • ✔ Cash & Interest Ratio: The company’s cash (if earning interest) and interest-bearing securities must be less than 33% of total assets.
  • ✔ Revenue from Non-Halal Activities: Haram income should be less than 5% of total revenue.

Example Using SPUS ETF

SPUS (S&P 500 Shariah ETF) follows these criteria to ensure that all its holdings are Shariah-compliant:

  • ✔ Debt Ratio: The companies inside SPUS have debt levels below 33% of total assets.
  • ✔ Cash & Interest Ratio: The ETF ensures that cash holdings and interest earnings remain under 33%.
  • ✔ Revenue from Haram Activities: Any company with more than 5% revenue from non-halal sources is excluded.
  • ✔ Business Activity Screening: SPUS filters out banks, alcohol, gambling, and other non-halal industries.

💡 Why Choose SPUS? – Instead of manually checking every stock, investing in a halal ETF like SPUS allows you to hold a diversified portfolio of compliant companies.

Challenges of Halal Investing & Where to Find Halal Stocks

Finding Shariah-compliant stocks can be difficult, especially because most screening platforms require paid access. However, there are still a few options available:

Free & Paid Halal Screening Tools:

  • ✔ Zoya Finance – A halal stock screening app (limited free version, full version requires payment).
  • ✔ Islamicly – Offers a database of halal stocks with some free access.
  • ✔ IdealRatings & MSCI Islamic Indices – More institutional-focused, but useful for research.
  • ✔ Manual Screening – If you don’t want to pay for a service, you can manually check financial statements for compliance with the 33% debt rule and 5% haram revenue rule.

Where to Invest in Halal Stocks & ETFs?

Several platforms offer Shariah-compliant investing options, including:

  • ✔ Wahed Invest – A halal robo-advisor offering halal stocks, ETFs, and sukuk (Islamic bonds).
  • ✔ Ethis Invest – A halal crowdfunding real estate platform.
  • ✔ Interactive Brokers, M1 Finance, and eToro – Provide access to halal ETFs like SPUS and HLAL.
  • ✔ Baraka App – A user-friendly platform that helps in finding and investing in halal stocks.

Other Halal Investment Alternatives

If you want to diversify beyond stocks, here are other halal investment options:

  • ✔ Sukuk (Islamic Bonds) – Bonds backed by assets, rather than interest-based lending.
  • ✔ Halal REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) – Funds that invest in Shariah-compliant real estate projects.
  • ✔ Gold & Commodities – Investing in physical gold or halal commodity funds.
  • ✔ Crypto – Halal or Haram? – Some Islamic scholars consider Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies halal, as long as they do not involve excessive speculation (gharar).

Final Thoughts – Why Halal Investing Matters

For Muslim investors, halal investing is about more than just profits—it’s about ensuring wealth is earned ethically and in accordance with Islamic values.

When I started, I struggled to find halal investment opportunities, but through research and experience, I was able to build a Shariah-compliant portfolio.

📌 Advice for new investors: Start small, use halal screening tools, and always do your own research before investing.
